The initial cost of renting an apartment can be quite high, as it often includes paying a security deposit, key money (礼金, Reikin), real estate agency’s commission, insurance, and other expenses. A guarantor is also required. Therefore, renting an apartment may not be practical for people on short-term stays.
As an alternative, there are monthly accommodations around Tokyo that do not require key money or a guarantor. These types of accommodations are also furnished, unlike rental apartments.
Types
Monthly accommodations are typically studio (1R) or bedroom and kitchen (1K) units. Some may also be designed like guest houses, with a shared kitchen or other facilities.
