If you purchase a bicycle at a store, they can register your bicycle at the time of purchase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\n\t\t\tIf you receive a bicycle from a friend, you will need to perform procedures to transfer ownership. Get your friend\u2019s anti-theft registration and bring it to a bicycle shop with the bicycle. They can register the bicycle under your name and affix a new sticker.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\n\t\t\tIf your friend no longer has the registration, have your friend write a Transfer Certificate instead.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<ul class=\"c-linkList c-linkList--related\">\n<li class=\"c-linkList__item\">\n\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.isc.isct.ac.jp\/housing\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/\u8b72\u6e21\u8a3c\u660e\u66f8.pdf\" class=\"c-link c-utilityLink c-linkList__link\">\n\t\t\t\t\tTransfer Certificate<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<svg class=\"c-link__icon c-link__icon--right icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"img\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<use xlink:href=\"\/housing\/wp\/wp-content\/themes\/titech\/assets\/img\/sprite.svg#pdf\"><\/use>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/svg><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\n\t\t\tIf you neglect to transfer ownership, you may encounter problems. If you are stopped by the police, and they find that the bicycle is registered under another person\u2019s name, you may be detained and possibly charged with theft. Never ride an abandoned bicycle for the same reason. Also, never ride a bicycle that is not equipped with a front light or brakes, because that is prohibited by law.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-heading c-heading--h2\">\n<div class=\"c-heading__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"c-heading__label\">Parking<\/h2>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Bicycle parking is permitted only in designated areas. If you park a bicycle in a prohibited area, it may get impounded. You would then need to go to the impound center and pay a fine to get your bicycle back.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-heading c-heading--h3\">\n<div class=\"c-heading__inner\">\n<h3 class=\"c-heading__label\">On Science Tokyo Campuses<\/h3>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">All bicycles and motorbikes used on campus must be registered. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsmc.titech.ac.jp\/koutu\/koutu.html\" target=\"_blank\">General Safety Management Center\u2019s website<\/a> for further information on how to register. Note that bicycles and motorbikes parked on campus without registration will be clamped or impounded.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-heading c-heading--h3\">\n<div class=\"c-heading__inner\">\n<h3 class=\"c-heading__label\">Tip<\/h3>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\" style=\"font-weight:bold; font-size:18px;\"><span style=\"font-style:italic;\">No Bicycle Parking<\/span> signs<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\n\t\t\tSigns banning bicycle parking are usually written in Japanese as \u99d0\u8f2a\u7981\u6b62 (<span style=\"font-style:italic;\">chuurin kinshi<\/span>).\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-heading c-heading--h2\">\n<div class=\"c-heading__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"c-heading__label\">Bicycle Safety<\/h2>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The National Police Agency provides five safety guidelines for cyclists:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"c-orderList\">\n<li class=\"c-orderList__item\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-orderList__label\">Cyclists should ride on the street and use sidewalks only in exceptional cases.<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-orderList__item\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"c-orderList__label\">Cyclists should ride on the left side of the street.<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-orderList__item\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-orderList__label\">Cyclists must reduce speed on sidewalks and give pedestrians the right of way.<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-orderList__item\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-orderList__label\">Cyclists must obey safety rules.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"c-list\">\n<li class=\"c-list__item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-list__label\">Riding double is prohibited.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-list__item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-list__label\">Riding side-by-side is prohibited.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-list__item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-list__label\">Riding under the influence of alcohol is prohibited.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-list__item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-list__label\">Cyclists must use bicycle lights at night.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-list__item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-list__label\">Cyclists must obey traffic lights at intersections and check for safety after coming to a full stop.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-list__item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-list__label\">Cyclists must not use umbrellas or talk on mobile phones when riding.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-orderList__item\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-orderList__label\">Children must wear a bicycle helmet.<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\n\t\t\tSee the National Police Agency Traffic Safety Guidelines for more useful information on safety.\n\t\t<\/p>\n<ul class=\"c-linkList c-linkList--related\">\n<li class=\"c-linkList__item\">\n\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npa.go.jp\/koutsuu\/kikaku\/trafficsafety\/traffic_safety_english.pdf\" class=\"c-link c-utilityLink c-linkList__link\">\n\t\t\t\t\tTraffic Safety Guidelines<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<svg class=\"c-link__icon c-link__icon--right icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"img\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<use xlink:href=\"\/housing\/wp\/wp-content\/themes\/titech\/assets\/img\/sprite.svg#pdf\"><\/use>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/svg><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-heading c-heading--h2\">\n<div class=\"c-heading__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"c-heading__label\">Bicycle Liability Insurance<\/h2>\n<p class=\"c-heading__lead\">Bicycle liability insurance covers accidents caused while riding a bicycle, including compensation claims for damage or injury to third parties.
